Understanding the Ten Nullifiers of Islam

This self-paced course introduces students to Nawāqiḍ al-Islām, the Ten Nullifiers of Islam, through a clear and structured study of the text and its explanation.

A nāqiḍ is something that nullifies or invalidates what was previously established. Just as certain actions nullify wuḍūʾ, there are beliefs, statements, and actions that can contradict a person’s Islam. Because of the seriousness of this subject, every Muslim should understand these matters carefully, with knowledge, evidence, and proper distinction between learning the general ruling of an action and applying that ruling to a specific individual.

Throughout the course, students will study each of the ten nullifiers individually, examine the Qurʾānic and Prophetic evidence connected to them, and learn the important explanations and principles mentioned by the scholars.

What You Will Study

Students will learn:

  • The meaning of nāqiḍ and nawāqiḍ
  • Why the scholars teach the nullifiers of Islam
  • The difference between major shirk and other forms of disobedience
  • Shirk in the worship of Allah
  • Taking intermediaries between oneself and Allah
  • The ruling concerning those who reject or doubt what Allah has revealed regarding disbelief
  • Preferring another way over the guidance of the Messenger ﷺ
  • Hating something brought by the Messenger ﷺ
  • Mocking Allah, His verses, His religion, or His Messenger ﷺ
  • Siḥr and its connection to the nullifiers
  • Supporting the enemies of the Muslims against them
  • Believing that someone may leave the Sharīʿah of Muḥammad ﷺ
  • Turning completely away from the religion of Allah
  • Important principles relating to takfīr, ignorance, intention, coercion, and the application of rulings to individuals

Who Is This Course For?

This course is designed primarily for youth and beginner-to-intermediate students of Islamic studies, but adults who want a clear introduction to Nawāqiḍ al-Islām may also benefit.

No previous study of the text is required.

Course Goal

The purpose of studying Nawāqiḍ al-Islām is not to encourage students to declare specific people outside of Islam. Rather, students are learning the boundaries of Islam, the seriousness of shirk and kufr, and the importance of protecting their own tawḥīd and īmān.

The course emphasizes learning the textual rulings while understanding that declaring a particular Muslim to be a kāfir is a separate matter that requires knowledge of the relevant conditions, impediments, evidence, and scholarly principles.

Primary Text

Nawāqiḍ al-Islām
by Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb رحمه الله

The course follows the text alongside a simplified presentation of the explanation of Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān حفظه الله, while preserving the Qurʾānic proofs, Prophetic evidence, and substantive points of the original explanation.

Suggested Pace

Students may complete the course entirely at their own pace. A suggested schedule is one module per week, allowing time to review the matn, study the evidence, complete the lesson activities, and revise previous material before continuing.

By the End of the Course

Students should be able to identify and explain each of the Ten Nullifiers of Islam, recognize their main evidences, define important terminology used throughout the text, and explain the basic scholarly principles surrounding these serious matters.

“If you associate others with Allah, your deeds will surely become worthless, and you will certainly be among the losers.”
Sūrah al-Zumar, 39:65

What Will You Learn?

  • In this course, students will study the ten nullifiers of Islam alongside the companion book, using the explanation of Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān حفظه الله. Students will learn what each nullifier means, the Qurʾān and Sunnah proofs connected to it, and the important explanations and distinctions mentioned by the shaykh. The course also teaches students how to understand key terms such as shirk, kufr, tawassul, shafāʿah, tawakkul, and iʿrāḍ, and how to avoid misunderstanding short statements from the matn without reading their explanation. Special attention is given to the difference between learning a general ruling and applying takfīr to a specific individual.
  • By the end of the course, students should be able to explain the ten nullifiers in clear language, identify the main proofs connected to each one, recognize important examples and exceptions discussed in the explanation, and use the material to better protect their own tawḥīd and understanding of Islam.
